Featured previously at Fivelements Bali, The Visual Arts Gallery of India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, India and the Museum of Oriental Arts in Turin, Italy, Fivelements is pleased to bring you this exclusive debut of Women in Bali at the holistic wellness retreat in Hong Kong.

Women in Bali is a photography project, between art and reportage, a journey of images in the heart of Bali and a tribute to the energy of all the women who live there. Bruna Rotunno portrays the female universe and the creative power of the island where water is revered as the most sacred source of life. In the artist’s shots, women move with grace and strength: they dance, work, live and smile between rocky appearances and landscapes in motion, in the expanded dimensions of spirituality.

The two events will commence with an inspiring talk by the Italian artist, Bruna Rotunno, followed by a Balinese-Inspired Culinary Journey featuring handcrafted plant-based gastronomy in the award-winning Fivelements Sakti Dining Room™.

Women in Bali exhibition and book signings by the artist will be available at Fivelements Hong Kong in the premier Hong Kong Golf & Tennis Academy in Sai Kung during Amazing Grace, the Women’s Wellness Programme, 8-11 March 2018.

About the Women in Bali Project

Bali is a living island, and Bruna Rotunno’s photographs reflect a harmony that is continually reinvented. These portraits are an homage to creative energy, to the island, and to all the women who live there.

In recent years, Bali has attracted Indonesian and foreign women who have sensed the powerful energy of the place to its fullest. The result is a vast community of women, who have contributed significantly to the island, portrayed with intensity by Bruna Rotunno; these women, striked by the essence of a timeless dimension and by the spiritual power of nature, live under the sign of integration, gratitude and respect.

Bruna Rotunno shows the flow of the feminine side of life in Bali. Her work comes from a great attraction for the island, visited for the first time twenty years ago. Thanks to a project that has engaged her for eight years, Bruna Rotunno has built a story in pictures where every gesture, and every character, punctually translates the essence of a unique place, characterized by a fluid and harmonious energy. Starting from Balinese mythology, based on the worship of water - the Holy Water, the Great Mother, the symbol of creation and purification - the photographer reveals to the viewer the feminine side of the island. The sacred, the ritual, the creativity, the art, the music and the dance are told here through the daily actions of Balinese women, as emanations of spiritual power that drives the island's energy.

Every woman Bruna Rotunno met and involved in her story has left something: her image, her words, her thoughts, her stories and her poems. Bruna wanted to give voice to women. Her photographic works are characterized by a very personal use of the light that entering into a visual dialogue with the natural elements, in particular with water as the primary element, and the female figures that follow one another in a succession of colors and movements. Water is an image ritual that cleanses, flows and wraps; a dense presence of spirituality from the first shot to the last, that unfolds in cadences and ancestral meanings to reach the pinnacle in being feminine celebration of a girl who is lulled by the water and rain.

All this material is now collected in a book, which has more than 150 photographs, accompanied by texts by Anita Lococo, American resident for 35 years on the island, and Cok Sawitri, the largest Balinese writer. The book, published by Silvana Editoriale, launched in recently and is sold in prestigious book shops throughout Europe and the Americas. With the first 1000 copies of the book, a donation of 5% will be donated to the association Smile of Bali, which provides assistance and free operations to children with severe physical deformities.

«Bali is a living island that has always given me mixed emotions, stimulated by its fluid and shifting light, from a ritual made of gestures that make the invisible visible and above all by a widespread beauty that reflects harmony in constant evolution. Over times I have met many women, both Balinese and from other parts of the world, that on the island have initiated important artistic projects, social and ethical. Through their portraits, I tried to grasp their essence, to tell the female energy’s force symbolized by water, the vehicle of ancient memories and healing tool. The images touch the daily life of a place where everything is sacred and where the creative power of nature resonates with the energy present in all of us, making our dreams shiny and possible. This project is a tribute to the island and to all the women who live there.»
