The drumming will be on Djembe drums, hand-carved from heartwood and originally made by the people of Malinke, Mali.

In African culture drumming is about much more than simply composing music and beat. The word Djembe means gathering for peace and is often used for festivals, naming ceremonies, marriages and communication of messages between communities. Drumming is the very pulse of life, the way of communication between people to share cultural values, storytelling, harmony and creative expression within families and communities.

Building from simple beats to collaborative musical rhythms, experienced drummers will guide you and your family in a dynamic exploration bridging sound, movement and soul. Experience the joyful sensation of your unique rhythm as it connects with others in this high-spirited sound journey.

The Djijor group is led by the impassioned Abraham Djijor. Born in Ghana, West Africa, Abraham learned the African drums from the elders in his village whom like many local Africans learned the drums from their elders. This ancient yet timeless ritual of drumming has been passed from generation to generation over centuries and in most recent decades, the practice and ceremony of drumming has expanded beyond African borders to Asia and the West. Its exuberant and lively effect has drawn many people to take up drumming as a community activity much like its origin in Africa.

“Drumming is natural and live. It brings joy and energy to all those participating. It also helps boost people’s confidence and comfort with self-expression as well as relieving tension and stress. Teaching and sharing the magic of drumming is very exciting, especially when I see the positive impacts on my students, both in and outside of drumming sessions.”
